Artist: Travis Lober
Exhibition: The West: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Marilyn Werby Gallery
Today I visited the exhibition called The West: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. It’s an exhibition with all kinds of drawing about the good things, the bad things, and the ugly things, and most of them are related to the West. For example, goods things can be the cowboys who rescue innocent people from the bad guys, bad things are robbers who try to kidnap and rob people in a western town. The ugly can be both external or internal, it can be something that looks really ugly like spiders, scorpions, or centipedes; or it can be someone who has an ugly heart that try to frame other people.
I had conversation with Travis Lober. He is an undergraduate student works in BFA printmaking, and he is going to graduate this year. Travis had been working for 2.5 years, the reason why he entered this area is because his past jobs for 10 years were all related to arts, and he wants to create his own piece of art.
The piece that Travis created is called “Lurking Below", Travis used drypoint to create this work. Drypoint is a technique of printmaking, the artist will scratch the outline on a piece of plastic board, put ink on it after scratching, then put a piece of paper on top of the plastic board and use a roller to roll on the paper, that way the ink will be printed on the paper.
There are three spiders in this piece of art, Travis said those three spiders present the good, the bad, and the ugly. The spider on the left is a good spider, we often see them in our house, they will clean small bugs for us. The spider in the middle is called Heteropoda Venatoria, it has no dangerous to human, but it just looks ugly. The spider on the right is the Black Widow, it has very strong poison which can kill people, so it present the bad.
It is really interesting that each artist has their own idea of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Some painting looks like it’s presenting the good, but it is actually presenting the bad. Although the topic is the same for everyone, each person has different thought of the topic.
